Welcome to Counseling & Treatment Services
At the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation & Reentry (ADCRR), our Counseling and Treatment Services team within the Education, Programs, & Community Reentry Division is dedicated to providing tailored, evidence-based counseling services. Our goal is to assist individuals in their journey toward successful reintegration into society as productive citizens. We offer specialized programs focusing on Substance Use Disorders (SUD) and Sex Offense Treatment, designed to meet the diverse needs of those in our care.
Addiction Treatment Services (ATS)
Addiction Treatment Services oversees the delivery of substance abuse treatment to ADCRR individuals identified as being in need of intervention. The screening process is based on self report and a review of the available corresponding data. Individuals are ranked according to need, time left to serve, and risk for recidivism into one of four services categories: Intensive Treatment, Moderate Treatment, Educational, or No Need. Intensive Treatment consists of a twelve-month program and Moderate Treatment is three to six months in duration. ADCRR has a grant funded co-occurring treatment program which is six-months long. In addition, ADCRR has a grant funded six-month modified therapeutic community that offers medication assisted treatment, in-reach services, job readiness, and peer support services. Women’s substance abuse treatment is gender-specific. Minors substance abuse treatment uses evidenced based curriculum specifically for individuals under 18.
Counseling and Treatment Services provides trauma informed care. All ATS treatment groups are conducted by licensed Substance Abuse Counselors who incorporate evidence-based curricula in a cognitive behavioral treatment approach. Treatment is offered at a variety of complexes and units. DUI treatment is offered at Private Prison facilities for male offenders and ADCRR is pursuing a license from the Arizona Department of Health Services to provide DUI treatment to women offenders. These programs provide 36 hours of DUI treatment as statutorily mandated for convicted DUI offenders. Offenders attend classes in such topics as parenting, family dynamics of addiction, and stress management throughout their length of sentence. In addition, ADCRR is working with HOPE, Inc. and Community Medical services to provide reach-in services to incarcerated individuals.
The Sex Offender Education and Treatment Program (SOETP)
The Sex Offender Education and Treatment Program is based on a cognitive-behavioral and relapse prevention model of assessment and treatment. Evidence-based treatment and best practices assist the offender in managing sexually exploitative behavior, thereby reducing the risk of re-offending. Treatment components include acknowledging responsibility for offending behavior, recognizing and modifying cognitive distortions, managing deviant sexual urges and impulses, developing victim empathy, enhancing social competencies, and acquiring relapse prevention skills. Participants are expected and encouraged to take an active role in treatment by attending weekly psycho-educational classes, group therapies, relapse prevention groups, quarterly treatment plan reviews, and completing specific homework assignments.
Self-Help and Mutual Support Groups
ADCRR recognizes the vital role of self-help and mutual support groups in supporting individuals on their recovery journey. Through partnerships with community volunteers, we offer programs such as Uncarcerated, Peer Support Services, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), and SMART Recovery at many of our facilities. Where space and volunteer availability permit, participants have access to these groups on a weekly basis.
These programs foster peer-driven accountability and mutual encouragement, forming a crucial part of an individual’s path to long-term recovery and personal growth.
Recovery Wellness Program
The Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation & Reentry in partnership with Arizona Complete Health offers selected individuals the opportunity to complete the State of Arizona Recovery Support Specialist Certification. These certified individuals teach the Recovery Wellness Program curriculum to other individuals. The program is seven-months long and consists of the following psycho-educational classes: Drug & Alcohol Education, Criminal & Addictive Thinking, Socialization, Release & Reintegration Preparation, and Relapse Prevention. In addition, they provide one-to-one peer mentoring services.
